It was launched on 22 September 2014 following the merger of the Japan Restoration Party headed by Tōru Hashimoto, and the Unity Party, led by Kenji Eda. ==Leaders== The Japan Innovation Party was initially led by Kenji Eda and Osaka city mayor Tōru Hashimoto. In December 2014 Hashimoto announced his resignation from the role in order to focus on the mayoral election scheduled for the spring of 2015. Eda remained as sole leader of the party.〔 (''Hashimoto Quits Ishin Leadership'' )〕 Following Eda's resignation in 2015, former DPJ member Yorihisa Matsuno was elected leader of the party. 〔 ()〕
